You're not weak. Your body is trying to protect you.

You don't need another exercise sheet. You already know the stretches, the foam roller, the workarounds. You get through a workout, a workday, a car ride. Then you pay for it later.

Maybe you hesitate before you bend down. Maybe you skip lifting, running, travel, or playing with your kids because you don't trust what your back will do next. That isn't a lack of effort. That's a body that learned to guard.

Relief that lasts a few days isn't the same as having a process you understand.

Richard Aceves speaking with a client during a movement assessment

The exercise is part of the tool. You are the work.

Your body works as a unit. Forcing a range, chasing a position, or grinding a rep at all costs isn't the same as owning the tension you can actually keep today.

Safety comes first. Confidence follows. Performance and daily life come after. You stay with a phase as long as you need, based on how you feel, how much work you put in, and what your body is asking for today.

Stop asking, “How far can I go?” Start asking, “How far can I go while staying connected?”

What changes when you stop treating your body like the enemy.

Richard on living with spasms

In 2022 the hip pain I had been experiencing for years had worsened. It worsened to the point where movement was incredibly difficult and I started to lose my identity. After traditional interventions and speaking with 5 orthopaedic surgeons, I was diagnosed with “Otto's disease” and told the only option I had would be a full hip replacement. Fast forward to February 2023, Jack had reconnected with an old friend, Ed, and told him about my upcoming surgery scheduled in March. Ed was curious, looked at my x-rays and, after not seeing any structural damage, asked if they could hop on a call with his friend Richard, a movement specialist, who's helped many people like myself avoid surgery and get out of pain. Two years ago today we arrived in Amsterdam, met with Richard and he got me out of pain during our first session. That forever changed my life. It was incredible and we cancelled my surgery that week. It's work though, don't get me wrong, I train with intention now. I move better and I'm no longer in pain. I've been working with Richard ever since, forever learning and growing. I feel like I've made an insane amount of progress both physically and mentally over the last two years. Ed, you've been there ever since too. With Jack and I. And overall you've been incredible as well. I appreciate you both so much. Richard and Ed, thank you both for all that you do. There's a shit ton you both are doing and I hope you both know that you change the lives of those you come across. 😁

When i woke up in the morning, i felt no tension in the left hip, while i took a shower, got dressed i felt a little. Then i sat down and tried to connect to the left hammies (which felt nicely sore from yesterday) and the tension on the hip disapeares right away. Happy Birthday :) I learned my homework yesterday. I am very thankful. It was a painful but good experience. It's not that i didnt know these things like „problem with the outside world“, „over-empathetic“ etc but the fact that you could see these things in tension/displacing tension really impressed me and encouraged me to learn more about it and implement movement in my daily practice. Seeing these things and influence them by movement- maaaan, this thing is biiig!!!!!
I'm astounded by the remarkable changes I feel in my body is 2 weeks The effects of the Swami and active meditation are truly insane. I can't quite comprehend the magic behind it all, but I am immensely grateful for your expertise and guidance. Thank you for this incredible experience.
Okkkk had the best sesh today! Did sled drags, sprints and pushes. Belt squat/marches, calf raises and lemme tell you Richard, I died. That was intense, I still feel whew. And I'm sorry, it's completely out of my comfort zone to film myself but I know its important for feedback so I'll do it next week otherwise you'll have to yell at me 🤷‍♀️ Zero hip pain! The guy who owns the gym came up and said hi (met him last year when I used to go) and the first thing he said to me was that I was moving way better 😌
Back in the 300 club this morning! Can't believe I nearly had a f*cking hip replacement 😅 Let's Go!!!
@DREDCADDYE
That session helped so much. Who knew that going heavier would relieve the hip pain? Thank you! Also, I felt so calm afterward; it was like stress left the body with each rep. It has been the best night's sleep in months, and there is no hip or back tightness in the morning!

A path back to movement, not another six-week plan.

01

Reclaiming Safety

Find a starting point your body can trust.

Slow down the noise. Reconnect. Begin moving without forcing it. Breathing, awareness, and foundational work you can do lying down or seated. No equipment required.

02

Restoring Confidence

Build capacity without chasing the old fear pattern.

Once you have a base, add more physical stress and more trust. Progressive loading. Strength under manageable stress.

03

Sustaining Freedom

Return to the life you want, with a process you understand.

Training, work, hobbies, carrying, running, lifting. Recognize a flare without panic. Return to the tools when new stress shows up. Phase 3 isn't a finish line. It's consistency.

This is a movement-education framework. Your pace and results will vary.

When your body feels unsafe, don't start by trying to prove it wrong.

Phase 1 isn't about doing nothing. It's about doing enough of the right thing that your body has a reason to trust movement again.

You begin with a daily walking practice adapted to your capacity, foundational calf work, and SWAMI, a breath and isometric practice used to help you notice tension and stay present.

Richard Aceves standing against a white wall

I didn't build this from a textbook.

  • Rockslide at 5,000 meters, at 18.
  • Hip crushed into more than 35 pieces.
  • Five months bedridden. Relearned how to walk.
  • Six surgeries, including a double ulnar replacement.
  • The prognosis: live with the pain, stay sedentary, deal with it.

I chose a different route. I started studying movement, discomfort, capacity, and the relationship between stress and the body. First because I had to, then because other people were stuck in the same loop.

My outcome isn't a promise of yours. Bodies are different. Histories are different. I built this because people deserve more than being told to avoid their body forever.
